1. Inspire and develop the builders of tomorrow with cross-curricular, hands-on STEAM Learning programs. LEGO ® Education

2. Welcome LEGO ® Education into the classroom. Today's students will enter a world of untold possibility and potential. Not only must they master digital skills to thrive in the future, but they also need the confidence to navigate the unknown and respond to frequent change. Based on the LEGO ® brick and carefully designed lesson plans, LEGO Education offers hands-on, playful, and educational STEAM experiences for students in early learning, primary, and secondary education as well as afterschool programs and competitions. Studies show that hands-on learning is the best way educators can develop their students’ confidence – and LEGO Education’s comprehensive cross-curricular solutions are designed to do just that. 2 / 3

5. Confidence is believing in your ability to do your best to accomplish something. It’s being comfortable with trying something you’ve never done before. Confidence is being willing to explore and take risks. It’s the ability to try something new without being fully aware of the outcome, to embrace the process of learning. Confidence is knowing that failure is a part of learning. It’s being willing to get out there and try, putting ideas on the line, believing in yourself, and knowing that you’re capable of achieving your goals. Building Confidence 8 / 9

9. In the San Diego Unifi ed School District, Michael Goodbody and the STEAM School Innovation team are reinventing the way STEAM is taught, starting even before kindergarten. The team developed an ambitious plan, rooted in extensive research. Aware that success would require getting students engaged and having fun while learning, they determined that LEGO ® Education solutions were the perfect fi t for their initiative. With versatility and a holistic design that promotes collaboration and the development of 21st century skills, LEGO Education solutions were an easy choice. Goodbody’s team of STEAM architects began developing a high-quality curriculum based on LEGO Education solutions. Because they could track indicators for the kids they were losing in high school as far back as third grade, they knew it was imperative to start their initiative as early as possible. They went all out in equipping their pre-kindergarten and kindergarten classrooms for success, implementing LEGO Education early learning solutions including LEGO Education STEAM Park. “We had this dream of, what if we could help students identify their interests early on and develop their love for STEM and STEAM as they go through their K-12 journey with us?” said Goodbody. Now that dream is a reality—students in 44 of 119 district elementary schools receive one hour of STEAM instruction at least four days a week. Goodbody says that LEGO Education STEAM Park sets have been one of their greatest resources, “They accomplish a lot of goals for us, not only in physical science, but in modeling Next Generation Science Standards.” These standards emphasize providing students with the resources necessary to model concepts. “LEGO Education has allowed kids to create scenarios to illustrate things like the interactions between plants, animals, and the environment.” In Goodbody’s view, this kind of learning makes it easier for teachers to assess whether students are grasping content while, at the same time, fostering collaboration with their peers. “It’s been a very powerful tool,” he said. All types of learners are benefi ting from this approach. “We’ve seen kids with language learning issues who hadn’t spoken all year making an eff ort to articulate what they had built,” said Goodbody. This accessibility to all learners is part of the strategy in starting this initiative so early. “We’re really big about addressing those formative years as students are developing a sense of self. We want to make sure that we break down the barriers that society has set up in terms of what’s for boys and what’s for girls, or who’s an engineer and what do they look like?” Goodbody is excited about the future of the program and the students who are participating. “We think there will be measurable outcomes; we’ll see kids’ ability to problem-solve refl ected in the standardized testing, which is so often the way the public perceives schools and districts.” With this initiative only in its pilot year, there’s a lot of potential for the future. California has adopted computer science standards that Goodbody expects will soon become a graduation requirement. He believes that means there are more LEGO Education solutions on the horizon for San Diego. His team is particularly excited about the prospect of incorporating LEGO Education WeDo 2.0 into the program to get kids started with computer science early, and with the role the SCRATCH interface associated with LEGO Education SPIKE™ Prime could play in the upper elementary grades. Success Story San Diego is Changing the Game When it Comes to STEAM Learning “We had this dream of, what if we could help students identify their interests early on and develop their love for STEAM and STEM as they go through their K-12 journey with us.” The # of days per week students receive at least one hour of STEAM instruction. 16 / 17

8. LEGO Education tools allow kids to shed their labels and find the way that they can express themselves and interact with the world. Paula Don – director of gifted and talented education, School District of Philadelphia In Paula Don’s 30 years with the School District of Philadelphia, she has held many titles: elementary classroom teacher, computer teacher, director of educational technology, and now director of gifted and talented education. It’s an impressive resume to be sure, but to many she is known simply as the “LEGO Lady.” Whether it’s kindergarteners using LEGO ® Education solutions to foster early literacy or middle school students exploring math, science, and engineering through LEGO MINDSTORMS ® Education EV3, Don is confident that LEGO Education solutions are offering all of her students an opportunity to shine. One of the largest districts in the United States, Philadelphia is culturally, socioeconomically, and developmentally diverse. Despite those differences Don has found a common thread: “Kids love LEGO; it’s familiar and inclusive for all and thus makes for easy introduction to the classroom.” Don was able to look at different grade levels that had simple machines in their curriculum and pair LEGO Education Simple Machines directly with the content to create hands-on, engaging experiences. These experiences allow students “to really see and understand the implication of the content. They internalize it and integrate it into their consciousness so they can recall it later in real-life situations.” This kind of experience is bridging the gap between the variety of learning styles among students in 93 Philadelphia schools. For example, a fourth grader with selective mutism was able to work with a peer and engage on a higher level because the Simple Machines Set gave him a way to demonstrate that learning isn’t always reliant on speaking or writing. These students demonstrate that LEGO Education solutions aren’t just about engaging with content but also transforming students’ confidence in their ability to learn concepts, demonstrate them beyond the curriculum, and build the 21st century skills that are critical in order to succeed today. Don has seen that transformation firsthand. “I was in a classroom with a lot of English language learners which can be a real barrier to confidence in the classroom. But these kids were working with the sets, laughing when things didn’t go as they expected, and continuing to work toward a solution. It was really wonderful to see.” This boost in confidence had other positive side effects as well. Don said the students were “...more focused, showing perseverance and grit, they were going to stick with the problem until it was solved.” “I really believe that for a lot of our kids, LEGO bricks is the way to keep them engaged and allow them to discover their own gifts,” says Don. “Many of our students aren’t strong readers, or come from homes that aren’t language rich, and because of that they don’t always get the chance to shine. LEGO Education solutions give them that chance.” On the other end of the spectrum, Don says that the students in the gifted program thrive on the multimodal style of thinking that comes with working through problems using LEGO Education WeDo 2.0 and LEGO MINDSTORMS Education EV3. “To be able to do that in this three- dimensional space, and then do the coding to make it work in the way they want, taps into so many different ways of thinking. For the gifted students , that sort of expansive learning is really wonderful.” Don has played a key role in making sure that as many Philadelphia students as possible are developing a 21st century skill set through the hands-on, playful learning that comes with LEGO Education. And don’t worry—she won’t be handing off the title of LEGO Lady any time soon.
